The build up to Telford this year was different this year and as I have spoken about this in my last couple of blog posts I will only touch on it here, it felt good to complete some models, 5 in fact which for me must be some kind of record, I cannot remember the last time I finished 5 models in one year let alone in 2 short months, I know this number surprised many know more than myself I can tell you. My upturn in modelling output has also spurned me on to return to my blog, and my 5 posts since the summer has shown me the importance of this wonderful hobby to my life and getting projects finished really does feel good and I am looking forward to getting back to the workbench and starting on some new models. With the Telford panic over and life returning to a more even level I can concentrate on reducing the pile of shame, I do feel more of an accomplishment if I can complete a half build especially if that project has stalled due to some inadequacy in my skill set which I have then overcome to complete it.
One of the great things about the show in Telford is the varied and different genres of models you see, yes there are a lot of Aircraft and Armour there is also a lot of models from film and TV which you don’t necessarily get from smaller shows on the circuit. It all adds to the variety that you find in the hobby and it is nice to see a bit of colour as you walk around the club stands and I think that is a good thing, nothing worse than walking round and seeing tables upon tables of tanks all green and very similar. I know that may sound a bit ironic coming from an armour modeller, I love the variety of colour and the different types of models attracts people to your stand and you never know they may notice your rather drab green tank and it may inspire them, it may not but you never know. Another one of the things that I love about Scale Model World is the atmosphere, the minute you walk into the show you hear the rumbling noise of people talking, many of which hadn’t seen each other since last year, we had to queue out in the car park this year and I cannot ever remember a queue that long and everybody was in good spirits with lots of model talk going on and nobody complaining, which makes a change without a doubt. Of course the main event at Telford is getting together and chatting to the many modelling friends, for me getting models finished and on the club stands plus the meeting up and socialising is the main draw, yes it is full of traders willing to help you part with the hard earned however it is the people that make the show for me. Saturday this year was the busiest I have seen it quite a few years and it is always difficult to get around and look at all the great models both on show and for sale, the competition had its own room this year which I feel was better even though we only gave it a fleeting visit, so much much to see and do and although it is a 2 day affair so very little time.
So here I am a month or so on from the show and I am feeling positive, I know what my next victim is going to be, a half built half painted Tamiya 1/35 Churchill that I started far too long ago and it is about time it was finished, so that is my aim to get this one finished without the pressure of getting it finished for a show and break my habit of only completing for Telford. My main problem is always motivation, without the motivation of getting it finished for a reason will I be able to get it done. Obviously time will tell and I still feel the Telford buzz that I feel every year which has normally buzzed off by now yet is still hanging around, maybe I have finally turned that corner and I will get more models finished than I have started, I am feeling positive but we will see. I am sure life will have something to say about that as we approach Christmas, work will be busy, there is of course family time and other responsibilities, we do have the London Plastic Model Show to look forward too although sadly we had to miss it this year we do have a local show in February coming up so all is not lost and I can always shut myself away once all the chores are done, I can hear the workbench calling so until next time.
